Cloud [chapter 8 (condensed into one chapter)]

Light stood in front of the mirror in the room. She was wearing a light blue silk wedding gown with silver lace cuffs. She was also wearing a blood red ruby on a silver chain; a gift from Alcea.

Dina handed her a bouquet of pink roses. “Light, you look amazing.”

Light glared at her reflection, “I don’t care if I look ‘amazing’ or not, I am not getting married off to some stranger.”

Dina sighed, “I don’t think Alcea cares about what you want.”

Eran threw open the door and smiled brightly at Light, “Wedding time, miss demoness.”

Dina glared at him, “Do you mind?”

“No, I don’t.”

Dina pulled out a bar of chocolate from her jean pocket and threw it at him. “Get out. You’re unwanted here.”

Eran caught the chocolate bar and put on an offended expression, “Such a low blow Dina. I’m so hurt!” He took a bite of the chocolate.

Dina snarled at him. Eran smiled back.

Light, who’d been so diligently ignoring this argument, found this the perfect opportunity to ask Eran the question that’d been bothering her, “Why does Alcea want to marry me?”

Eran shrugged, “Maybe because of your charming personality?”

“She does have a wonderful personality...,” Sighed a deep voice from behind Eran.

Eran turned around to glare at Alcea. The ability to become undetectable to one’s own familiars was quite unnerving to Light and Dina but it seemed to irritate Eran instead.

Alcea walked past Eran without even giving him a glance. He reached for Light’s hands and kissed it. Alcea smiled slightly when he saw the necklace. “You wore it,” he whispered, “I was afraid that you wouldn’t like it.”

Alcea turned and clapped. A dozen demon-servants entered the room, each carrying a pair of shoes ranging from leather combat boots to diamond heels. Alcea turned back to Light, “Which one do you prefer?”

Light shook her head, “I need to talk to you.” She grabbed Alcea’s arm and steered him of the room. When Light was sure that she was far enough from the room she stopped.
Alcea frowned slightly, “What’s wrong?”

“I’m going to be very blunt with you, alright? Ok, I don’t know who you are or why I’m here. My best friend died seconds before you brought me here. Now you want to marry me as it was the most normal thing in the world. It isn’t. I want to know why I’ve been brought here- the truth about why you brought me here.” Light demanded.

Alcea’s eyes softened, “Because you are amazing, Light.”

Light frowned.

“You don’t believe me?” Alcea sounded hurt.

“No, I don’t.”

Alcea looked at her sadly and took a large breath as if he was about to dive underwater, “I’m not going to hurt you,” he lowered his voice even further, “I love you.” He looked as if he was about to cry.

Light was utterly disgusted, she’d heard from Dina that Nixa had been Alcea’s familiar. She died to fulfill the order given to her, but Alcea actually dared to pretend that she was nothing. He dared to pretend that he was innocent!

“Liar.”

A fist appeared right above Alcea’s head and struck down. Alcea evaded the blow and turned quickly. Specks of light began to gather around Alcea’s hand into the form of a sword. As he shifted into a defensive stance the light solidified into a white broadsword with a red hilt.

The hand extended past the original spot, revealing a wrist that was covered in gold and silver chain loops, then a tanned arm with a tattoo. Finally, a head; or maybe not a complete head, no… it looked more like… a hat. The rest of the body followed; navy tee, grass-stained jeans, sneakers. With an exception of the missing head the person almost looked normal.

Light stared at the body and whispered quietly to Alcea, “Do you know this guy?”

Alcea lowered his sword and glared at the… hat-man. Then he turned back to the direction of the room and roared, “ERANOS!” The entire building shook as cracks began to appear on the ceiling. “COME!”

Eran appeared before them almost instantaneously. He frowned at Alcea, “What-”

Alcea pointed at the hat-man, “This. I thought you killed it.”

Eran scowled at the hat-man, “You didn’t die.”

A gap appeared near the center of the hat as a pair of greenish orb-eyes appeared above the gap. A pink tongue stuck out of the gap, “No reeeeeeally, I hadn’t noticed.”

Eran grinned, “Good. So you won’t miss your life when I kill you. Excellent.”

The hat smiled back, revealing yellow teeth, “What makes you think that you won’t fail at that again?”

“He isn’t going to fail,” Alcea’s low voice rumbled, “because I’m forbidding him from fighting you. I’ll get someone competent for that.”

Eran sneered at Alcea, “Competent? Bloody rivers of hell, look at him! Any other pets you could’ve summoned up wouldn’t have been able to touch a hair on his head! And I-”

“SHUT UP!”

“You ungrateful human! You-”

Light tuned out the rest of the conversation. She looked at the hat-man who was juggling his eyes. The hat turned to her and one of the eyes in his hands winked at her. The gap in the hat mouthed ‘go’.

Light froze. Go where, and why?

The hat-man pointed at a door behind her. Light frowned; it wasn’t there before.

Who could she trust… a stranger who wanted to marry her? Or a stranger without his head?

Whatever, my enemy’s enemy is my friend.

Eran was definitely her enemy.

Light glanced back at Eran and Alcea. They were still bickering with each other. Light stared at the door.

She turned the knob slowly and walked on.

The hat smiled.
